Germany’s Trade Balance for September 2026 was released, reporting a surplus of 21.3B. This figure significantly surpassed the market consensus expectation of 16.3B, representing a 30.7% surprise relative to consensus. The actual print also marked an increase from the previous month’s reading of 14.5B.

Following the release, market reaction in EUR pairs was mixed over the initial 15 minutes. EURJPY saw a gain of +16 pips, while EURCAD declined by -13 pips. Other pairs showed smaller movements. EURAUD gained +0.7 pips, EURCHF fell -1.0 pips, EURGBP fell -1.3 pips, EURNZD fell -3.6 pips, and EURUSD fell -0.7 pips. Compared to historical behavior, the 15-minute moves for EURAUD, EURCHF, EURGBP, EURNZD, and EURUSD were small relative to their median 1-hour moves of 12 pips, 4 pips, 5 pips, 12 pips, and 5 pips respectively. EURCAD’s -13 pips move was larger than its median 1-hour move of 8 pips. EURJPY’s +16 pips move was also larger than its median 1-hour move of 10 pips.
