US Housing Starts for July 17, 2026, came in at 1.427M. This figure significantly surpassed the consensus estimate of 1.204M, representing an 18.5% surprise above expectations. The actual release also marked an increase from the previous figure of 1.177M.

The US Dollar saw a mixed reaction in the immediate aftermath. After 15 minutes, USDJPY gained +6.2 pips, USDCHF rose +5.5 pips, and USDCAD was up +4.4 pips. Conversely, EURUSD declined -7.3 pips, AUDUSD fell -3.3 pips, NZDUSD dropped -3.9 pips, and GBPUSD was down -1.0 pips. XAUUSD experienced a significant decline of -183 pips after 15 minutes. For most USD pairs, these initial 15-minute movements are relatively small compared to their historical median 1-hour moves. For instance, EURUSD’s -7.3 pips move is close to its median 1-hour move of 7 pips, and USDJPY’s +6.2 pips is below its median 1-hour move of 9 pips. XAUUSD’s -183 pips move, however, is substantially larger than its median 1-hour move of 21 pips and its top-quarter move of 53+ pips.
