IMF Raises 2024 Global Growth Outlook to 3.1% on AI, Warns of Resilience Limits and Geopolitical Risks
- IMF raises 2024 global growth forecast to 3.1% from 3.0%.
- Upgrade attributed to AI-driven investment, but warns of resilience limits due to depleted oil stocks and high debt.
- Geopolitical risks persist, with oil prices projected at $96/barrel for 2024 and potential spikes to $130 under escalation.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has upgraded its global growth forecast for 2024 to 3.1 percent, a slight increase from its July estimate of 3.0 percent, citing an AI-driven investment boom. Despite this revision, the IMF’s latest World Economic Outlook, released Tuesday, cautioned that the global economy is nearing the limits of its resilience due to depleted emergency oil stocks, overstretched government budgets, and persistent geopolitical tensions. The report highlighted that while growth had withstood Middle East conflicts better than anticipated, the base case assumes the Strait of Hormuz reopens in March 2027, with oil prices projected at $96 a barrel this year and $87 a barrel next. The IMF also noted that 32 countries now account for 95 percent of global growth, with South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, and Taiwan-adjacent supply chains identified as key beneficiaries of AI-linked exports.
