The US Import Price Index month over month for July 2026, released today, printed at 0.3%. This figure came in significantly below the consensus expectation of 1.6%, representing a surprise of -81.3% against consensus. The previous month’s reading was 1.9%.
Following the release, the US Dollar showed strength against most major currencies. Fifteen minutes after the data, AUDUSD was down 3.3 pips, EURUSD was down 7.3 pips, GBPUSD was down 1.0 pips, and NZDUSD was down 3.9 pips. USDCAD was up 4.4 pips, USDCHF was up 5.5 pips, and USDJPY was up 6.2 pips. Gold, XAUUSD, was down 183 pips at the 15-minute mark. For most pairs, these initial moves are smaller than their respective median 1-hour moves, such as the median 7 pips for AUDUSD or 11 pips for EURUSD.
