New York Open Briefing: Tuesday, September 1, 2026

The New York session opens with a cautious tone, following declines across Asian and European equity markets. Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell -1.92%, while Germany’s DAX 40 is down -0.85%. US equity futures also point lower, with the USTEC down -1.05% and the US500 down -0.58%. Gold, XAUUSD, also saw a notable drop of -1.49%. In currency markets, the USD has shown strength, up +0.15% over the last 24 hours, while JPY is weaker, down -0.15%.

Earlier, France reported mixed new car registration figures, with an annual increase of 7.4% but a monthly decline of -25.6%. Indian economic data showed a Goods Trade Balance of -86.1B, slightly better than consensus. However, Reserves Change came in at -8.1B, significantly below expectations, and the Current Account to GDP Ratio was -0.5%, missing the 0.1% consensus, indicating potential INR weakness.

Attention now shifts to the United States, with several key releases scheduled. At 13:45 UTC, the S&P Global Manufacturing PMI is due, with consensus at 55.5. This is followed at 14:00 UTC by the high-impact ISM Manufacturing PMI, expected at 55.2, and ISM Manufacturing Prices Paid, with a consensus of 63.5. Fed Vice Chair for Supervision Barr is also scheduled to speak at 13:05 UTC. Looking ahead to Wednesday, Australia’s GDP q/q will be a focus for AUD traders, with consensus at 0.3%.

Traders will closely monitor the upcoming US manufacturing data for direction.
