  • Employment fell 0.1% q/q versus 0.4% forecast gain; participation slipped to 70.4%.
  • Labour Cost Index rose 0.4% q/q, below 0.5% forecast, slowing from 0.7%.

New Zealand’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 5.7% in the third quarter of 2026, Statistics New Zealand reported, above the 5.5% consensus and the 5.6% prior reading. Bloomberg described it as a fresh 11-year high. Employment fell 0.1% on the quarter, against forecasts for a 0.4% gain and after a 0.5% rise in Q2, while the participation rate slipped to 70.4% from 70.7%. The release comes three days before the election, adding to pressure on the government. One market commentary said the miss across the main measures could weigh on the New Zealand dollar and trim pricing for a December RBNZ rate hike. The kiwi was already near a cycle low against the Australian dollar after the RBNZ’s recent hold, and the policy gap with a more hawkish RBA, which has just raised rates, may widen. The same commentary noted that RBNZ hawks have focused on core inflation and fuel costs, so the labour data alone may not settle the debate, with inflation expectations surveys later this month and front-end swap rates in focus.
