  • US Consumer Sentiment fell to 46.3 in October, below 47.6 expected.
  • This is the third consecutive monthly decline and a 50-year low.
  • Both 1-year (4.7%) and 5-year (3.5%) inflation expectations increased.

The University of Michigan’s preliminary Consumer Sentiment Index for October registered 46.3, a notable decrease from September’s 48.1 and significantly below economists’ consensus expectation of 47.6. This marks the third consecutive monthly decline in consumer confidence, reaching its lowest level since May’s 44.8 and reportedly the worst reading in at least 50 years. Concurrently, one-year inflation expectations edged up to 4.7% from 4.6%, and five-year inflation expectations also increased to 3.5% from 3.4%. The report indicates a deteriorating consumer outlook on personal finances and business conditions, alongside persistent price pressures.
