  • US Initial Jobless Claims fell to 206K, below 210K forecast.
  • Continuing claims rose to 1.799M, above 1.790M expected.
  • Data indicates a tight labor market with few layoffs.

The US Department of Labor reported on Thursday that initial jobless claims decreased to 206,000 for the week ending August 15. This figure came in below the market expectation of 210,000 and marked a decline from the prior week’s revised 212,000. The data suggests that employers are largely retaining staff, keeping layoffs near historically low levels. However, continuing jobless claims, which track individuals already receiving benefits, rose by 18,000 to 1.799 million for the week ending August 8, slightly exceeding the 1.790 million forecast. The 4-week moving average for initial claims also saw an increase of 4,250. The US Dollar experienced mixed movements following the release.
