  • US JOLTS job openings fell to 7.079 million in August.
  • This was below the 7.225 million forecast and July’s 7.335 million.
  • The data suggests a softening in labor demand.

Job openings in the United States declined to 7.079 million in August, according to the latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This figure came in below economists’ expectations of 7.225 million and represented a notable decrease from July’s upwardly revised 7.335 million. The 256,000 drop from the previous month and the 146,000 miss against forecasts indicate a softening in the demand for workers. Other components of the report, such as hires at 5.2 million, quits at 3.1 million, and layoffs at 1.6 million, remained largely unchanged during the month.
