- August openings revised up to 7.19M; payrolls report next
US job openings climbed to 7.523 million in September, up 333,000 from an upwardly revised 7.19 million in August, according to the Labor Department’s JOLTS report released Tuesday. Economists had expected a rise to roughly 7.1-7.16 million, depending on the survey, so the print was a clear upside surprise. The job openings rate was 4.5%.
Other components pointed to a firmer labor market:
– Hires rose by 131,000 to 5.402 million
– Quits increased to 3.4 million from 3.0 million, a rate of 2.1%
– Layoffs and discharges declined to 1.6 million (rate 1.0%)
– Private-sector openings rose by 236,000 to 6.644 million
The release comes ahead of the monthly payrolls report and follows recent strong US data and a Fed hold with hawkish dissents, which have kept rate-hike expectations elevated. [STORY_ID: 1088b937-f856-482e-82bc-25ec2f23ca74]
