Australia’s Unemployment Rate for August 2026 came in at 4.5%. This was higher than the consensus forecast of 4.3% and also an increase from the previous month’s reading of 4.4%. The actual figure represented a 4.7% surprise compared to the market consensus.

Following the release, the Australian dollar saw declines against major pairs over the initial 15 minutes. AUDUSD was down 12 pips, AUDJPY fell 10 pips, and AUDNZD dropped 18 pips. Against the Euro and Sterling, AUD weakened, with EURAUD up 26 pips and GBPAUD up 45 pips. These moves are generally moderate when compared to historical volatility. For instance, the 12-pip decline in AUDUSD is less than its median 1-hour move of 15 pips, and the 45-pip rise in GBPAUD is below its top-quarter move of 55+ pips after past releases.
