Canada’s Common CPI year over year was reported at 2.7% for August 17, 2026. This figure came in above the analyst consensus expectation of 2.4%. The print represents a 12.5% surprise relative to consensus. The previous reading for this indicator was 2.6%.

Following the release, CAD pairs showed modest movements. USDCAD moved -2.2 pips five minutes after the print and -4.7 pips after 15 minutes. AUDCAD also saw a decline of -4.7 pips after 15 minutes. CADJPY gained +4.2 pips over the same 15-minute period. Other pairs like EURCAD, GBPCAD, and NZDCAD moved -2.1 pips, -3.2 pips, and -2.7 pips respectively after 15 minutes. CADCHF saw a +0.6 pip move after 15 minutes. These initial movements are relatively small when compared to historical median 1-hour moves, which typically range from 10 pips for CADCHF to 24 pips for GBPCAD after similar past releases.
