US Initial Jobless Claims came in at 194K for the latest week, below the 197K consensus and level with the previous reading of 194K. That is a surprise of -1.5% versus consensus, meaning fewer claims than economists expected. The release crossed at 13:28 UTC.
The measured reaction in the first 15 minutes was small on most pairs. EURUSD was -2.1 pips at 5 minutes and -4.4 pips at 15 minutes, against a median 1-hour move of 10 pips and a top-quarter move of 20+ pips. GBPUSD was -3.4 pips at 15 minutes (median 13 pips), USDJPY +3.2 pips (median 10 pips), and USDCAD +5.1 pips (median 10 pips). AUDUSD, NZDUSD and USDCHF each moved less than 2 pips at 15 minutes. Gold was the exception in pace: XAUUSD was -30 pips at 5 minutes, then +60 pips at 15 minutes, close to the 66+ pip top-quarter level and well above its 29 pip median 1-hour move. That is a sharp reversal within the window.
Outside gold, moves so far sit below typical 1-hour sizes. On EURUSD, direction after past releases has matched the initial move only 54% of the time in our live sample, so early direction has been a weak guide.
