The US session opens with the dollar on top of the 24h strength table at +0.21%, followed by JPY at +0.12%. EUR is the weakest of the group at -0.17%, with CHF at -0.12% and CAD at -0.11%. Since the reference point, JP225 is down 0.67%, NZDUSD is down 0.47%, XAUUSD is down 0.42% and EURUSD is down 0.35%. USDCHF is up 0.48% and USDJPY is up 0.33%. The risk meter reads +0.02 on the -1 to +1 scale, which is close to neutral, so the moves are not being driven by a clear risk-on or risk-off tilt.

Initial Jobless Claims printed at 194K against a consensus of 197K, a surprise of -1.5%. The figure came in below the forecast. Positioning data shows the crowd book on EURUSD moved 8pt toward long in 24 hours, even as the pair is lower on the session. The book on GBPJY is also 8pt more long over the same period.

The calendar is heavy with central bank speakers. BoE Governor Bailey speaks at 14:15 UTC, and BOC Governor Macklem follows at 15:30 UTC. ECB President Lagarde has two appearances, a High impact speech at 16:00 UTC and a further Medium impact one at 18:00 UTC. The Bank of Mexico Interest Rate Decision is due at 19:00 UTC, with the previous rate at 6.5%. The Annual Budget Release from Canada lands at 21:00 UTC.

With EUR the weakest currency over 24 hours, the most important item ahead is the Lagarde speech at 16:00 UTC.
