US Retail Inventories month over month for August 2026 were reported at -0.2%. This figure came in below the market consensus expectation of 0%. The previous month’s reading was also 0%, indicating a decline in inventories after a period of no change.

Following the release, market reactions across major currency pairs and gold were observed. AUDUSD moved -0.6 pips 15 minutes after the print, while EURUSD saw a -0.1 pip change. GBPUSD moved -0.5 pips, and NZDUSD registered a +0.3 pip change. USDCAD moved +5.4 pips, USDCHF +3.5 pips, and USDJPY +8.6 pips within 15 minutes. Gold, XAUUSD, saw a move of +48 pips over the same period. For most pairs, these initial moves were small when compared to their typical median 1-hour moves, which range from 7 pips to 13 pips. However, XAUUSD’s +48 pip move was already above its median 1-hour move of 33 pips observed after past releases.
