The Canadian Raw Materials Price Index (RMPI) month over month for August 2026 was released at -2.2%. This figure came in against a consensus expectation of -2.4%. The actual print represents a 8.3% surprise relative to the consensus. The previous month’s reading was -6.9%.

Following the release, the Canadian dollar showed varied movements against major pairs over the initial 15 minutes. AUDCAD moved up +7.5 pips, while CADCHF moved down -2.8 pips. CADJPY also moved down -3.4 pips. EURCAD saw a rise of +6.3 pips, and GBPCAD increased by +7.2 pips. NZDCAD gained +5.1 pips, and USDCAD moved up +2.2 pips. These initial 15-minute movements are generally smaller than the median 1-hour moves observed after past releases of this event. For example, USDCAD’s +2.2 pips move is less than its median 1-hour move of 10 pips, and CADJPY’s -3.4 pips move is less than its median 1-hour move of 10 pips.
