SMC (Smart Money Concepts) is a trading strategy that tracks where institutional traders place their orders. Instead of using retail patterns, SMC traders identify order blocks, fair value gaps, breaks of structure, and liquidity sweeps to enter alongside the banks and prop desks. The method works on forex, Gold, indices, and crypto across all major timeframes.

Regular technical analysis uses indicators and chart patterns that all retail traders see. SMC studies the price-action footprint left by institutional orders, which often runs counter to retail psychology. SMC entries typically wait for liquidity sweeps (stop-hunts) at swing highs and lows, then enter when structure breaks in the new direction.

SMC works when applied with discipline, risk management, and multi-timeframe confirmation. The win rate is similar to other methods (40-60%) but the risk-reward ratio is typically 2:1 to 5:1 because entries are at structural extremes with tight stops. SMC fails when traders enter every order block without waiting for confluence (BOS, FVG fill, liquidity sweep).

BOS (Break of Structure) confirms trend continuation when price breaks the previous swing high in an uptrend or swing low in a downtrend. CHoCH (Change of Character) signals possible reversal, the first lower-high in an uptrend or higher-low in a downtrend. Both are foundational SMC building blocks that trigger entries.

H4 and D1 are most reliable for primary market structure, H1 for refined trend, and M15 for entry timing. Lower timeframes (M5/M1) produce too many false structures and aren't reliable for SMC. A standard SMC workflow: identify H4 structure, mark order blocks and FVGs on H1, drop to M15 for entry trigger after liquidity sweep.

Pure price action is enough. Many SMC traders trade with no indicators at all, just market structure, support/resistance, and candlestick reading. Indicators that auto-mark order blocks, FVGs, and BOS/CHoCH speed up chart analysis but aren't required.
