What this release is

The Consumer Price Index month over month for China, or CPI m/m, measures the average change in prices paid by consumers for a basket of goods and services over the previous month. This key prices sector indicator is released monthly by the national statistics office of China, found at stats.gov.cn.

Forex traders monitor China’s CPI m/m as it provides insight into inflationary pressures within the Chinese economy. Inflation data is a critical input for the People’s Bank of China when formulating monetary policy. Changes in policy, such as adjustments to interest rates, can influence the attractiveness and value of the Chinese Yuan, CNY, in global markets.

Upon release, market attention typically focuses on the headline CPI m/m figure, though any revisions to prior data can also draw scrutiny. After past releases, the Chinese Yuan has often reacted to unexpected deviations from consensus forecasts. The typical impact rating for this monthly release is Medium.

How we measure: moves come from our own MT4 price feed and our archived minute bars, sampled 5, 15 and 60 minutes after each release against the pre-release price. No estimates, no third-party numbers. Releases where our feed had a gap are skipped, never guessed.

What usually happens

conditional history
Beat above consensus Accumulating. Shows after 8 live-captured releases n=0 live
Miss below consensus Accumulating. Shows after 8 live-captured releases n=0 live
In line within the surprise band Accumulating. Shows after 8 live-captured releases n=0 live

These are counts of what happened after past releases, conditional on the surprise direction. They are history, not a forecast, and never a trade recommendation. Sample sizes are shown because small samples mislead; rows stay locked until the sample is honest.
