HFT Scalping

HFT (high-frequency trading) scalping is a strategy that opens and closes positions in seconds, targeting 1-5 pip moves on M1 or tick charts. It relies on quote-driven entries and ultra-low latency execution rather than indicator signals. Most HFT scalping is automated through EAs, but a small group of manual traders run HFT scalping with one-click trade panels on raw-spread accounts.

HFT scalping requires a VPS hosted within 10 milliseconds of your broker's matching engine. Running HFT from a home computer adds 50-200ms of latency, which destroys the edge. Most quality VPS providers (Beeks, ForexVPS, NYC Servers) cost $25-50 per month for a low-latency forex instance. Many ECN brokers bundle a free VPS with funded accounts above $500.

ECN raw-spread brokers explicitly permit HFT. IC Markets, Pepperstone Razor, FP Markets, and Tickmill are the most commonly recommended. Confirm in writing that the broker does not widen spread on fast trades, reject orders held under 30 seconds, or close the account for HFT activity. Most market-maker brokers either ban HFT or throttle it after detection.

Most prop firms restrict pure HFT. FTMO allows fast scalping if average hold time is above 15 seconds, MyForexFunds banned HFT entirely, The Funded Trader varies by program. Read each prop firm's evaluation rules carefully before deploying any HFT strategy, a single rule violation can fail the challenge or void the account.

Raw spread accounts only. On EURUSD that means 0.0-0.3 pip plus commission, on XAUUSD under 30 cents. Standard accounts with 1.5-3 pip spreads burn through profit on every trade. The HFT edge usually disappears above 1 pip spread on majors, and above 50 cents on Gold.

Regular scalping targets 5-30 pip moves on M5 or M15, with hold times of minutes to hours. HFT scalping targets 1-5 pip moves on M1 or tick charts with hold times of seconds. HFT requires VPS infrastructure and raw-spread accounts that regular scalpers can skip. Many traders start with regular scalping before adding HFT.
