What this release is

Germany’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) month-over-month measures the average change over the prior month in prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. This key inflation indicator for the Eurozone’s largest economy is published monthly by Destatis, Germany’s national statistics office.

Forex traders closely monitor German CPI as a primary gauge of inflation within the Eurozone. Significant changes in consumer prices can influence the European Central Bank’s (ECB) monetary policy decisions. Historically, higher-than-expected inflation readings have sometimes led to expectations of tighter monetary policy, which can impact the Euro’s valuation.

The market typically focuses on the headline month-over-month figure immediately upon its release. While the initial reading often drives market reaction, any revisions to previous months’ data are also observed. The release provides a timely snapshot of price pressures, contributing to the broader economic picture for the Eurozone.

Reaction = EURUSD move 60 minutes after the release, measured from our own price history. Story links appear for releases our news desk covered; every release gets a row here whether or not it gets a story. Values from before our live tracking began are the current figures in the official statistical series, so they include later revisions; live rows record the number as printed.
