What this release is

Spain’s Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices, or HICP, year over year measures the change in the average price of goods and services purchased by households in Spain. This key inflation indicator is published monthly by Spain’s national statistics office, INE.es. It falls under the prices sector of economic data.

Forex traders monitor this release closely as it provides insight into inflationary pressures within the Eurozone’s fourth largest economy. Persistent inflation trends in Spain can influence the European Central Bank’s monetary policy decisions. Changes in the ECB’s stance on interest rates or quantitative easing can impact the valuation of the euro against other currencies.

The market typically focuses on the initial year over year percentage change reported. While this release is a national indicator, its contribution to broader Eurozone inflation metrics means it is generally considered to have a medium impact on currency markets after past releases.

How we measure: moves come from our own MT4 price feed and our archived minute bars, sampled 5, 15 and 60 minutes after each release against the pre-release price. No estimates, no third-party numbers. Releases where our feed had a gap are skipped, never guessed.

Reaction = EURUSD move 60 minutes after the release, measured from our own price history. Story links appear for releases our news desk covered; every release gets a row here whether or not it gets a story. Values from before our live tracking began are the current figures in the official statistical series, so they include later revisions; live rows record the number as printed.
